My son's letter:
Dear people reading,
My name is Jacob Rider and I have a disease called Ushers Syndrome *Type 2. That means I suffer from hearing loss and vision loss. I have to wear hearing aids everywhere (except for when I sleep) to hear. When I am in school I use a FM to enhance my hearing for what the teachers are saying. The FM directly sends the sound to my hearing aids, making it easier to hear the teachers. I cannot see well during night or peripherally. Despite this I play sports like track and field, soccer, and a little bit of basketball. I love playing videogames on my computer and gaming consoles. I am told that by the time I am an adult I will lose most of my vision. Even still I believe that a cure will come about. That is why I am going to Boston Children's Hospital. In Boston they will perform eye tests and genetic tests, with blood drawn from me, to isolate the gene that caused my disease. Once this gene is found, they can begin to develop a treatment for my syndrome.
My hope is that you will support the Foundation for Fighting Blindness through our Riders Reach Team. They give their money that people raise to fighting blindness and my disease which also deals with hearing loss. I hope you will support this but not just for me, but for other people who have my disease but a lot worse. Some people have balance problems too. They will go blind sooner and some are completely deaf without their hearing equipment. So please raise money for this foundation.
*(there are three types of this disease.)
