"Our daughter, Kaylin Rae Huertas, is losing her sight due to Retinitis Pigmentosa. She was diagnosed August 19, 2008 when she was 9.5 years old. We were in shock at receiving such devastating news. The impact on the family and Kaylin's emotional state would be great. Kaylin, did not comprehend the challenges that she would face--such as adapting to new educational services and using a walking cane at school. All she understood was, her parents were worried and something was wrong. Now, at 14.5 years old, she is Legally Blind, has depth perception problems and uses a cane. Despite her long journey, she is quite an amazing young lady. She is truly a fighter--fighting to save her sight".
What is Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP)?
"RP--is a group of genetic disorders that affect the retina's ability to respond to light. This inherited disease causes a slow loss of vision beginning with decreased night vision and loss of peripheral (side) vision. Eventually, blindness results and there is no cure. As her night vision decreases, her ability to adjust to darkness becomes more difficult. She stumbles over objects in the dark. Walking at dusk and night is difficult and she sees poorly in dimly lit rooms--such as movie theaters. While her vision during the day may be normal, her inability to see in dark conditions is considered night blindness. Kaylin also has difficulty identifying colors, this is referred as being color blind".
Why is it important to donate?
"Although Kaylin has come a long way, she still hopes for a cure. That is why our family supports The Foundation Fighting Blindness. It raises funds to find treatments and cures for different types of blinding diseases. We have signed up to help raise funds by creating a fund page honoring Kaylin. What's more, the Foundation Fighting Blindness' Chairman, Gordon Gund, and his wife, Lulie, are so committed to this fight, they have agreed to match donations made through the end of this year DOLLAR-FOR-DOLLAR. It's easy to join in. Just hit DONATE and give what you can to Kaylin's Fight For Sight. Your donation is tax-deductible. Thank you so much for honoring Kaylin in this way and for supporting the amazing and important work of The Foundation Fighting Blindness. We are grateful for your support." Addis & Luis Huertas
